Hormone Testing 101
5 Things You Need to Know About the Birth Control Pill
There is a ton of mixed advice on the topic of hormone testing and I’m sure that each hormone expert has a slightly different opinion on this complicated topic!
Here at Nourished with Nina, my job is to give you the most valuable information I know, collected by various hormone experts and resources! ;)
In this post, I will give you an overview on the pros and cons of hormone testing, as well as some some valuable testing resources, so you can make an informed choice about what is best for your unique situation.
The Best Foods for Hormone Balance (Part 1)
Let me preface this post by saying … the development of birth control was a HUGE win for women’s rights.
It allowed us the opportunity to further our education, grow in our careers, and it allowed us to claim more freedom over our bodies. We worked hard for the rights to birth control and then shouldn’t be dismissed!
Having said that, there is A LOT women don’t know about taking this tiny pill each month.
The reason being … we were never taught. Rarely do we have a discussion with our doctors about what the pill is actually doing to our bodies each month.
And knowledge is power, right?
It’s my goal to spread awareness of the affects of the birth control pill so women can make an informed choice as to whether it is, or isn’t, the correct option for them.
Why You Should Be Tracking Your Menstrual Cycle
When it comes to balancing your hormones, food can be a tricky dance!
This is in part because every single women’s body and lifestyle is DIFFERENT. Your genetics are unique to you, your stress is unique to you, and above all else…what you choose to EAT is unique to you.
So naturally, following a blanket “guideline” for getting your menstrual cycle & fertility back on track can be freakin’ hard.
Where do you turn?
Luckily, there quite a few staple foods & nutrients that are going to be AMAZING for hormone balance across the board!
High Cortisol & Low Progesterone...Could you be Struggling?
Instead of getting a “real" period each month, I was just spotting inconsistently. In addition to these odd menstrual symptoms, my anxiety was ALL over the place. Plus the cramps. Plus the acne….
I felt like a serious mess from head to toe.
But even back then, when all of these menstrual irregularities started arising, I still wasn’t tracking my period.
Because I had NO idea that I actually had the inner-power to take charge of my period.
My period felt like such a foreign invader … and I was the victim.
Luckily, I finally discovered just how much power I had to actually change the course of my period.
The 3 Most IMPORTANT Steps for Hormone Balance
There are number of common hormone imbalances that affect women, but one combination that I see SO often, is the correlation between high cortisol and low progesterone.
Why are these two hormones so important?
And how do you know if you’re struggling with an imbalance?
We will determine some of the common characteristics below & what you can do to start balancing your hormones right away.
How to Reduce Menstrual Cramps
Everything in our body is RELATED, which is why the standard “put out flames” model of healthcare doesn’t work when it comes to women’s hormonal health.
Addressing one specific area of the body might help alleviate symptoms in the short term, but it totally ignores the fact that our entire body works together in a very delicate and sensitive way.
We must look at all the pieces and parts of the endocrine system to start feeling truly vibrant and like our goddess-selves again!
I am going to breakdown the 3 most important areas of hormone health for you and give you some very tangible and practice tools you can start implementing right now to start feeling better a lot faster.
Working Out and Your Cycle....What You Need to Know.
I am going to be REAL upfront with all of you … I still struggle with some intense period pain each month. Just like clock-work, day one of my period comes around, and I am hit with some mega cramps. It can be really frustrating to work so hard on your diet and stress reduction and still find yourself curled into a ball with a heating pad, essential oils (and let’s be real, some ibuprofen), each month. So, I hit up my favorite hormone books/holistic coaches to figure out what in the WORLD is going on with menstrual cramps, and the science behind them.
The Period Blues…What GIVES?
I recently posted a story over on my instagram about the importance of syncing your workouts with your menstrual cycle.
The response to my story was incredible, and I figured I should share in a little more detail over here!

Why I Created the 3-Month Coaching Program
Here you are again...period time. Just like clockwork, you feel your mood spiraling downward and that familiar urge to cry at literally nothing at all sets in. What GIVES?
Our bodies go through some intense hormonal changes throughout the month, and most of the time, we are working against them … not for them.
Why Work with a Health Coach?
I was always afraid of how anxious or nervous I was going to feel. I would worry about being able to make it through the work day without feeling completely exhausted. And I dreaded waking up with yet ANOTHER upset stomach. Most of all, I was constantly stressing about the “best” food to put in my body. I was always on the defense! And my negative self-talk was making the situation even worse.
